On a recent morning at the track, the California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation (CTHF) welcomed backstretch workers for a health fair designed to do something simple, but impactful: make care more accessible.

Open to all licensed backstretch workers, the event brought together medical professionals, wellness resources, and community support in one place, reinforcing CTHF’s ongoing commitment to those who keep California racing moving every day.
At the heart of the event were free medical screenings, giving attendees the opportunity to check in on their health without barriers. In addition to screenings, participants were introduced to CTHF’s year-round services, including dental and optometry care which are resources that are often difficult to access in a traditional setting. The goal wasn’t just to provide care in the moment, but to encourage ongoing engagement, with attendees invited to schedule follow-up appointments across medical, dental, and vision services.

The health fair also reflected a broader view of wellness, one that extends beyond clinical care. Attendees received complimentary haircuts, took home healthy snacks, and connected with programs designed to support everyday well-being. Giveaways and raffle prizes, including an electric toothbrush, a year-long gym membership, sunglasses, and a heating pad, added an extra layer of engagement while reinforcing the importance of maintaining personal health.

“Our health fairs are designed to raise awareness about the wide range of services and programs that CTHF offers to the backstretch community.” said CTHF Executive Director, Jordyn Egan. “Our physicians and dentists are available year-round, but individuals don’t have to wait until they’re unwell to come by. We also offer programs like discounted gym memberships, health education, and cooking classes that support individual well-being and strengthen the community.”

Events like this highlight an important truth: supporting the backstretch community goes beyond race day. It’s about ensuring that the people behind the sport have access to the care, resources, and support they need to thrive both on and off the track.
